  • This course is concerned with an understanding of how passive margins form and evolve. Passive margins are found at every ocean and they mark the transition between continental and oceanic crust. Offshore vast sedimentary basins are found that often host the largest oil reservoirs ever found (e.g. the North Sea. This course aims at offering an exciting overview of this subject, integrating information from several disciplines that encompass geophysics, structural geology, geochemistry and geomorphology. By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

    1. explain and critically assess the different approaches used in passive margins studies;

    2.describe and appreciate the endogenous and exogenous variables, and the ways in which these variables interact to form passive margins.
